Caldera de Taburiente the great hiking adventure in La Palma<\/strong><\/h2>

Get ready to take on the most spectacular hiking route in La Palma. The Caldera de Taburiente, the heart of the island\u2019s only National Park, is not just a landscape \u2013 it is an experience felt in your legs, your lungs and your soul.<\/p>

A colossal crater, vertical walls rising more than 2,000 metres above your head, water flowing between volcanic rocks, Canary Island pine forests and a constant play of light and colour that feels almost otherworldly.
This is not a walk in the park. This is about experiencing the island in its rawest, most powerful form \u2013 on foot.<\/p>

This hike is designed for active people who love demanding routes and big challenges. With every step, you go deeper into La Palma\u2019s wildest side, discovering dramatic viewpoints, living ravines and hidden corners that can only be reached by walking.<\/p>

The start: heading into the heart of the National Park<\/strong><\/h3>

After picking you up at your meeting point, we drive towards the only access point<\/strong> to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. From Los Llanos de Aridane, we begin the ascent by road, gradually leaving civilisation behind as the landscape becomes more and more impressive.<\/p>

From the area of Los Barros, we descend towards the Barranco de Las Angustias. The first views are already striking: a vast ravine and, in the distance, the monumental outline of the Caldera, hinting at what lies ahead.<\/p>

We continue to the Mirador de Los Brecitos (1,081 m), the starting point of the hike. The air is fresh, the silence broken only by wind and flowing water. This is where the real adventure begins.<\/p>

The route: walking inside a giant<\/strong><\/h3>

From Los Brecitos, we enter the greenest and most humid part of the park. The trail winds its way through Canary Island pines, small wooden bridges and natural viewpoints where the Caldera\u2019s walls rise dramatically all around us.<\/p>

Along the way, we discover places rich in history, such as Lomo de Tenerra, and landscapes that seem designed to stay etched in your memory forever.<\/p>

After around two hours of hiking, we reach one of the most magical spots on the route: Playa de Taburiente<\/strong>. A true oasis in the heart of the park, where crystal-clear water invites you to cool off and enjoy your picnic, surrounded by a natural amphitheatre unlike anywhere else in the world. Time seems to stand still here.<\/p>

A short stop at the visitor centre helps us understand the sheer scale of the Caldera, our position inside the crater\u2026 and what still lies ahead.<\/p>

The final challenge: El Revent\u00f3n and the Barranco de las Angustias<\/strong><\/h3>

From this point onwards, the hike becomes more demanding \u2013 and even more spectacular.<\/p>

We begin with the descent of El Revent\u00f3n<\/strong>, a steep and technical section that really tests the strength of your legs. The vertical views from here are simply breathtaking. Gradually, the landscape changes as we move towards the southern part of the crater, drier and more volcanic, with the scenery transforming step by step.<\/p>

At the end of the descent, we reach the riverbed of the Barranco de las Angustias<\/strong>, still filled with water, pebbles and gravel shaped by constant erosion. This is where true adventure trekking begins: around 5 km walking directly along the ravine bed, surrounded by rounded stones and loose gravel.<\/p>

The vertical walls are awe-inspiring, dotted with Canary Island pines that seem to grow in defiance of gravity. Around us, unique geological formations appear, natural pools perfect for a refreshing break, and sections where water flows like a wild mountain river.<\/p>

In the final stretch, we encounter the fascinating pillow lavas<\/strong>, volcanic formations created under the sea millions of years ago \u2013 a real journey back in time.<\/p>

Eventually, the ravine opens up, light floods in and the first banana and avocado plantations of La Vi\u00f1a appear, where our vehicles are waiting for the return journey.<\/p>

Tired legs, deep satisfaction, and the feeling of having experienced something truly special.<\/p>

The Coloured Waterfall: nature in constant change<\/strong><\/h3>

For many years, the Coloured Waterfall was one of the most famous spots in the Caldera. Today, this waterfall has been reduced to a drop of around two metres.<\/p>

The reason is completely natural. The Caldera de Taburiente is a huge erosion crater, and the material falling from its walls (stones and gravel) accumulates in the ravine faster than the water can carry it away. As a result, the ravine floor rises year by year, and the waterfall gradually loses height.<\/p>

This process is entirely natural and part of the landscape\u2019s ongoing evolution.<\/p>

For this reason, we have decided not to include<\/strong> the ascent to the Coloured Waterfall, as it would require leaving the main trail and adding unnecessary kilometres to an already demanding route. The full Caldera experience remains just as spectacular without it.<\/p>
