Discovering La Palma’s laurel forest: Cubo de la Galga, San Bartolo and Playa de Nogales

If there is one place on La Palma where nature reveals itself in all its splendour, it is undoubtedly the northeast of the island. Join us on an unforgettable journey through the green heart of Puntallana and Los Sauces, on a route that blends hiking, local gastronomy and a deep connection with the ancient laurel forest of the Canary Islands.

Our walk begins at the Cubo de la Galga, one of the island’s most iconic trails. From the very first steps, we enter a tunnel of lush vegetation: giant ferns, hanging vines and centuries-old trees form a dense green canopy above us, like something out of a fairytale. This is an ideal route for families, following comfortable paths with no major elevation gain, yet filled with corners that inspire awe. We walk alongside moss-covered walls, where constant humidity nourishes life, and the sound of water emerging directly from the rocks reminds us that this is a land rich in natural springs.

As we gently ascend between 600 and 800 metres in altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly breathtaking. We reach the viewpoint of Somada Alta, where we pause to take in one of the most spectacular panoramas on the eastern side of La Palma. On clear days, the distant silhouettes of Tenerife and La Gomera can be seen on the horizon. But what truly stands out is the vast green ocean stretching below our feet — an immense forest climbing the mountainsides towards the island’s highest peaks.

From here, we can already spot our next destination: the village of San Bartolo, where a well-deserved break awaits. The descent follows a more open forest track, accompanied by aromatic plants such as thyme, mint and oregano, filling the air as we pass through sunnier areas of the forest. Reaching La Galga, a small agricultural neighbourhood in Puntallana, we are surrounded by terraced fields of reddish soil where avocados, bananas and mangoes grow, alongside colourful houses that lead us towards the small hermitage of San Bartolo.

Here, beside this humble chapel, we take a moment to enjoy something truly authentic. You may taste traditional wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, local cheese, and if we’re lucky, experience the warm hospitality of Mariluz, whose welcoming smile makes you feel right at home.

To complete the journey, we head to the spectacular Playa de Nogales, where the island reveals its wildest side. Nestled beneath dramatic cliffs in the north of La Palma, this stretch of black volcanic sand offers a striking and authentic landscape, defined by the contrast between rock, greenery and the Atlantic Ocean.

Reaching the beach is part of the adventure itself: a winding path descending through viewpoints, always accompanied by the sound of the sea and open views of the horizon.

This is a remote and untouched place, where nature sets the rhythm and every step brings a true sense of discovery — the very essence of La Palma.

A final stop that is not only seen, but truly felt.

This route is far more than just a hike — it is an immersion into the green soul of La Palma. An experience that combines walking, local culture and the privilege of exploring one of Europe’s last remaining laurel forests. We look forward to welcoming you, with walking poles ready and senses wide open. 🌿
