Hike from Los Andenes to Roque Muchachos
Walk from Los Andenes Viewpoint to Roque de los Muchachos
A trail through clouds, science, and history.
Get ready for an unforgettable experience high above the island of La Palma. This hike, covering one of the most spectacular sections of the GR131 route, links the Los Andenes Viewpoint with the iconic Roque de los Muchachos. It’s not only one of the most visually stunning routes in the Canary Islands, but also a walk through volcanoes, telescopes, and stories etched in stone.
Although the walk is of medium difficulty, the real challenge lies in the altitude: we’ll be hiking above 2,000 metres, which adds a touch of adventure and ensures every step is rewarded with breathtaking views.
A walk among volcanoes, clouds, and telescopes
From the natural vantage point of Los Andenes, the views are nothing short of epic: the Caldera de Taburiente opens up beneath your feet and, if the weather allows, you might even glimpse the neighbouring islands floating above a sea of clouds. Here begins our route along the caldera’s edge, always accompanied by the vastness of the sky and the crater far below.
Throughout the walk, we’ll follow the rim of an ancient erosion crater — one of the world’s finest geological examples of its kind. With each step, our guides will share fascinating insights into the island’s formation, the volcanic evolution of the terrain, and the unique life that thrives at these extreme altitudes.
A journey through knowledge
But this route isn’t just about nature — it’s also about science. Along the way, we’ll pass several of the telescopes belonging to the prestigious Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory, one of Europe’s most important scientific facilities. Here, astronomy meets hiking, and our guides will explain why this spot is one of the best places on Earth to explore the universe.
What’s more, certain parts of the trail offer a glimpse into the island’s human past, with archaeological and ethnographic references that tell us about the ancient Benahoarite people and their deep spiritual connection to this sacred landscape.
A summit to remember
We’ll finish our journey at Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on La Palma, where earth and sky come together. It’s the perfect moment to relax, take in one last panoramic view, and capture truly unique photographs — ones that will remain etched in both your camera and your memory.
