Tajogaite volcano hike – the most recent volcanic experience in la palma
There are places you visit… and others you truly feel.
The Tajogaite volcano is one of them.
On this hike, you’ll step into one of the most striking landscapes in the Canary Islands, born in 2021, where the earth still tells its story through ash, craters and silence.
This isn’t just an excursion.
It’s a way to understand La Palma from within.
What is the route like?
This guided walk follows a volcanic ash and sand trail of approximately 6.5 km. It’s accessible, with gentle gradients, making it ideal for those who want to discover the volcano without needing to be experienced hikers.
We walk across ash-covered terrain, with the recent lava flows of the Aridane Valley always in view, and pine forests slowly coming back to life. A landscape that changes with every step.
What will you see?
Along the route, you’ll discover:
- Fields of volcanic ash and sand expelled during the eruption
- The cone of Tajogaite volcano, the true protagonist of the 2021 eruption
- Vast lava flows that completely reshaped the island – first from above, and later, on the way back, we cross them by bus so you can experience them up close
- Unique contrasts between black ash, green vegetation and blue skies
- Panoramic views over the Aridane Valley
- Areas where the island’s geological power can still be felt
And beyond what you see, our local guides will share what cannot be seen:
how the island lived through the eruption, what changed, and how La Palma continues to move forward.
Level and difficulty
Although this is considered an easy to moderate hike, a basic level of fitness is required.
- Distance: approx. 6.5 km
- Elevation: gentle
- Terrain: volcanic ash and sand (slightly more demanding underfoot)
👉 This is not a city walk.
👉 If you’re comfortable walking up to 8 km on flat terrain, you’ll enjoy this route. If 8 km feels like too much, it’s better not to book.
Who is this tour for?
This experience is perfect for:
- Active families
- Travellers who want to explore the volcano without long hikes
- Visitors looking for something truly different in La Palma
- Nature and geology lovers
Why do it with a guide… and with us?
Access to this area is regulated and only permitted with authorised companies, as it remains a protected and geologically active environment.
But beyond the regulations, walking with a guide is what truly transforms the experience. You’ll gain a deeper, more personal understanding of what the island and its people lived through during those three months.
Our excursion is designed so you don’t have to worry about anything. We pick you up directly from your accommodation, or from the final meeting point at the Caldera de Taburiente Visitor Centre car park. We guide you throughout the hike and bring you back afterwards.
No stress. No logistics. Just enjoy the day.
An afternoon hike, the perfect moment
We run this route in the afternoon — one of the best times of day.
Temperatures remain pleasant thanks to the trade winds, and as the route is mostly downhill, the effort is reduced, making the walk far more comfortable.
The highlight: The crater edge
And most importantly: we take you right to the edge of the Tajogaite crater.
A breathtaking place where you can look inside, feel the raw energy of the earth, and capture one of those unforgettable photos: you, your family, and the volcano behind you.
Our local guides don’t just know the trail — they know the story.
They will explain how the eruption was experienced, how this landscape changed, and why today you are walking across one of the newest terrains in Europe.
If you need to cancel, please check our cancellation policy first.
Because you don’t come here just to walk.
You come to understand, to feel… and to take a piece of La Palma with you.
Walking alongside Tajogaite means understanding the power of nature…
and the ability of an island to be reborn.
If you visit La Palma, this is one of those experiences you will never forget.
