The best route to explore the National Park is hiking through the Caldera de Taburiente.
There is no doubt, the best route and path through the Caldera de Taburiente is the one that takes you from the Los Brecitos viewpoint to the parking place Las Angustias ravine in La Viña. An impressive and essential route if you decide to visit La Palma.

“The road to Los Brecitos”
Here we go Caldera de Taburiente. Not an easy road but what a great views and challenging road.
The narrow roads will take us first to the bottom of the ravine and then up the other side to Los Brecitos. A road to remember. But what really caught our attention was the magnitude of this National Park, is huge. A massive erotion crater, so big that you can not imagine.
As we arrive in Los Brecitos, what a an amazing view, we have time to enjoy the view and to relax for a few minutes. Don´t forget to eat your banana hier.
From Los Brecitos to Taburiente and the camping area, we start hiking.
As we pointed out, the path from Los Brecitos begins at an altitude of 1,008 meters and runs between of Canarian pine trees, dodging ravines, some of which carried water, winding between slopes in what is a fairly comfortable path that lasts about 2,5 hours until reaching the camping area and by then we have covered 5.6 kilometers of distance.
This first section is suitable for any type of hiker and is very well signposted. Pure enjoyment. We start on the North part of the crater and we walk slowly slowly to the center of it.
Step by step we leave behind ravines with such curious names like “Cienpiés” ravine, “Piedras Redondas” ravine or the “Risco Liso” ravine. There is a main stop to be done and it´s at the view point of “Lomo Tagasaste”. It´s the first great opportunity to see the magnitude of this National Park, is huge. A massive erotion crater, so big that you can not imagine
As we get close to the center there we find a curious name once again, “Taburiente beach” saids on one of the signs. We only have to go for 1 more minute and then all becomes clear, a small river of really cold water runs at this point. It´s amazing to find out that from this mountains the island is able to produce so much water.
Great place by the way to jump in the water for a few minutes. We always make a stop at this place, the view is also unique.
The best route to explore the Caldera de Taburiente.
A massive erosion crater of 9km wide and surrounded by soaring rock walls. This caldera, is not a crater, volcanic activity was key in its creation but Scientists now agree that this was a majestically tall volcanic mountain, and that it collapsed on itself and also with the help of erosion we have this amazing tall-walled amphitheatre.
La Caldera de Taburiente is filled with streams, waterfalls and rugged peaks in which to walk through. Hike in Caldera de Taburiente through dense pine forests and the fascinating Cascada de Los Colores.
Setting out from Los Brecitos at 1,081 metres above the crater floor, our route began direction the center of the National Park, direction to Taburiente river bed. Above us, the mountainous outline of Roque de Los Muchachos stood jagged against the blue sky while around us, the Canarian pine trees shared their shade with us.
Once in Playas de Taburiente where a fast flowing river tumbles over small rock pools as it hurries along the valley floor, turning into joy. Here we have the first great view of how magestic and huge is this National Park of Caldera de Taburiente, what an amazina view!!!
Following the path we face a long kilometer of downhill serpentine path until we reach the river bed again. The route follow to a detour to a fork in the ravine. To the left the river ends in a small pool where we can bath in its clear waters. To the right, the river turns deep yellow and this one leads to La Cascada de Colores, another must visit place in the National Park.
After this visit we still have the long way down Barranco de Las Angustias until the parking area, a great hike along the river bed still in front of us to enjoy and discover…
