How can I organise a transfer to the Volcano Route and where from?
If you are looking for a transfer to the famous Route of the Volcanoes (Ruta de los Volcanes) on La Palma, our local agency Isla Bonita Tours offers daily transport services to the Refugio de El Pilar, the starting point of this iconic hiking trail along the GR131 La Palma.
This route is one of the most spectacular hikes in the Canary Islands and a highlight of the La Palma hiking network. Our transfer service is designed especially for hikers who want a simple and efficient way to reach the trailhead.
We can organise transport for individual hikers, couples, small groups, or large groups of up to 50 people.
Please note that reservations between 19:00 and 08:00 must first be confirmed by phone.
Transfer from Los Canarios (Fuencaliente)
This is the most popular option for hikers, as Los Canarios is the most common finishing point of the standard version of the Volcano Route.
If you have your own car, the easiest option is to drive to Los Canarios in the morning and park your vehicle there. From this point, our taxi transfer will take you up to Refugio de El Pilar, where the hike begins.
After completing the 17 km hike along the volcanic ridge of Cumbre Vieja, your car will be waiting for you in Los Canarios. This way, you avoid long waits for taxis after finishing the hike.
Meeting point:
In front of the SPAR supermarket in Los Canarios
Prices per booking (up to 8 people)
Los Canarios → Refugio de El Pilar: approx. €50,00 per booking
Fuencaliente Lighthouse → Refugio de El Pilar: approx. €65 per booking
Los Cancajos → Refugio de El Pilar: approx. €40 per booking
Please note:
There is no mobile phone coverage at Refugio de El Pilar, so card payments must be processed before the transfer service begins.
If you prefer a private transfer exclusively for your group, the price is €60 per booking.
Prices may vary on Sundays and public holidays.
You can also book a taxi transfer from Los Canarios back to your hotel after the hike. Keep in mind that Los Canarios is a small village and taxis are not always available, so booking in advance is strongly recommended.
Transfer from Fuencaliente Lighthouse
For hikers in very good physical condition, the Volcano Route can be extended beyond Los Canarios to reach the Fuencaliente Lighthouse (Faro de Fuencaliente) at the southern tip of La Palma.
This is a beautiful and unique place to finish the hike, and at the end of the day you can even enjoy a swim at the nearby beach.
If you choose this option, we strongly recommend meeting first at the SPAR supermarket in Los Canarios. The lighthouse area has very limited mobile coverage, which can make coordination difficult if delays occur.
From the SPAR supermarket we drive together in convoy to Fuencaliente Lighthouse, where you can leave your car. After that, we will take you up to Refugio de El Pilar, where the hike begins.
Prices per booking (up to 8 people)
Fuencaliente Lighthouse → Refugio de El Pilar: approx. €65
Prices may vary on Sundays and public holidays.
Important:
Mobile coverage at Fuencaliente Lighthouse is limited. Sometimes there is a small signal near the entrance of the red and white lighthouse, depending on your mobile provider.

What is the Route of the Volcanoes like?
The Route of the Volcanoes (Ruta de los Volcanes) follows part of the GR131 La Palma long-distance hiking trail and is widely considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the Canary Islands.
It is also one of the most popular routes for independent hikers visiting La Palma.
Before starting the hike, it is very important to study the route carefully and check the elevation profile, so you know exactly what to expect.
Further down the page you will find useful links with detailed route descriptions and maps.
This hike is ideal for nature lovers who prefer to explore the island independently or in small groups.
The trail is linear and runs along the volcanic ridge of Cumbre Vieja, starting at Refugio de El Pilar and finishing in the municipality of Fuencaliente.
Total distance: approximately 17.1 km
Most hikers finish the route in Los Canarios, where our transfer service is usually waiting.
However, hikers with stronger physical condition sometimes continue to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse. This final section is less steep but incredibly scenic, passing right next to San Antonio Volcano and Teneguía Volcano.
Important information for hikers
Please never leave the marked trail, as doing so can cause serious damage to the fragile volcanic landscape of Cumbre Vieja.
It is not possible to approach the new 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcano from this route.
Please also remember that visiting the new volcano independently is strictly prohibited, as the area can still be dangerous due to ongoing gas emissions.
We also offer this route as a guided hiking experience, led by one of our experienced local mountain guides.
