Tajogaite volcano hike – walk through La Palma’s newest landscape
Some places you visit… others you truly feel.
Tajogaite belongs to the latter.
This guided hike takes you into one of the most striking volcanic landscapes in the Canary Islands, born in 2021. A place where the island still speaks through ash, silence and raw terrain.
This is not just a walk.
It’s a journey into the living history of La Palma.
What is the route like?
This guided trail follows a volcanic path of around 6.5 km, with a gentle profile and no major elevation gain. It’s a perfect option for travellers who want to experience the volcano without needing to be experienced hikers.
You’ll walk over volcanic ash and sand, with fresh lava flows stretching across the Aridane Valley in the distance, while the surrounding pine forests slowly reclaim the land. Every step reveals a changing landscape.
What will you see?
Along the route, you’ll discover:
Vast fields of volcanic ash and sand shaped during the eruption
The impressive Tajogaite cone, the heart of the 2021 eruption
Extensive lava flows that completely transformed the island
Unique contrasts between black ash, green vegetation and blue sky
Panoramic views over the Aridane Valley
Areas where the island’s geological force can still be felt
At the end of the experience, we’ll cross the lava fields by bus, allowing you to fully appreciate their scale and impact up close.
And beyond what you see, our local guides will share what truly matters:
how the island lived through those months, what changed, and how life continues today.
Level and difficulty
This is considered an easy to moderate hike, but a basic level of fitness is required.
Distance: approx. 6.5 km
Elevation: gentle
Terrain: volcanic ash and sand (can make walking slightly more demanding)
👉 This is not a flat urban stroll
👉 If you’re comfortable walking up to 8 km on relatively flat terrain, you’ll enjoy this hike. If that feels too much, it’s better to choose another option.
Who is this experience for?
This excursion is ideal for:
Active families
Travellers who want to explore the volcano without long routes
Visitors looking for a unique experience in La Palma
Nature lovers and geology enthusiasts
Why join this tour with a guide?
Access to this area is regulated and only permitted with authorised companies, as it remains a protected and geologically active environment.
But beyond that, a guide transforms the experience completely.
You won’t just walk — you’ll understand.
Our local guides share not only knowledge, but real stories from the eruption and the people who lived through it.
Stress-free experience from start to finish
We’ve designed this excursion so you can simply enjoy the day.
We pick you up directly from your accommodation or from the meeting point at the Caldera de Taburiente Visitor Centre car park. From there, we take care of everything — guiding, logistics, and your return.
No planning, no hassle. Just focus on the experience.
A perfect afternoon adventure
This hike takes place in the afternoon — one of the best times of day.
Thanks to the trade winds, temperatures remain pleasant, and as the route is mostly downhill, the effort is lighter and more enjoyable.
A moment you won’t forget
We take you right to the edge of the Tajogaite crater.
A powerful, emotional place where you can look inside the volcano, feel the energy beneath your feet, and capture an unforgettable photo — you, your family, and the volcano behind you.
Because this is more than just a hike.
It’s a chance to understand, to feel… and to take a piece of La Palma with you.
Walking alongside Tajogaite means discovering the raw force of nature…
and the resilience of an island that continues to rise again.
If you’re visiting La Palma, this is one of those experiences you’ll remember forever.
